Self-care as a Busy Urban Mom

When you never seem to stop, it’s easy to forget about your health and wellbeing. But this is exactly the time when it’s most important to not neglect it – you cannot keep pushing ahead if your body breaks down on you!

We take self-care seriously on this site. Learning to stop and take a breath is vital to stay in the fight. Here are some ideas for self-care to get you back on the right track if you’ve slipped lately.

Get Your Eyes Checked
Forgetting to get an eye exam is a bad thing to do. It’s easy to skip the last appointment or to email to cancel it. But once you’ve done that, it will likely slip your mind to do anything about it later.
Choosing the right optical specialist is important. You rely on your vision to do almost everything. Failing to get regular checkups doesn’t allow a professional to give your eyes a comprehensive examination to check for any abnormalities. Then they cannot catch and tend to any issues they discover.

Also, testing visual acuity and performing a color vision test are both excellent for picking up on the deteriorating vision. Choosing the right frames and lenses or type of contact lenses is also something that benefits from expert advice to make the right selection.

Recommit to Exercise
When using tiredness as an excuse to not exercise, then it barely requires any thought to repeat the same reasoning the next day. And then it becomes a new habit to not exercise.
Break the cycle by anchoring to something else you’re already doing. Therefore, if you go out to check on an elderly neighbor every morning, for example, follow that up with a walk around the block.

By anchoring to another task that you know you won’t skip, it steps over your mental block and gets you moving again.

Have a Personal Day
A personal day is where you take time off work or let your partner take care of the kids and permit yourself to slow down.

The idea here is to not run around ticking off errands and home tasks off your To-Do list either. If you’re backed up with tasks to clear, then take two days and set one aside as a personal day.
It’s up to you how to spend your day. It could be to go sightseeing to somewhere you’ve always wished to visit but never had the time. Visiting a spa for a massage or going swimming might be perfect to ease away the stress of life in the urban trenches too.

Sleep More
While there’s some debate about whether catching up on sleep is possible, it certainly seems to work.
Being exhausted all the time isn’t a long-term strategy. At a certain point, even taking short breaks during the day doesn’t ward away fatigue. Then preventing anxiety setting in becomes harder.

Create a nighttime routine to allow plenty of time to go to bed and sleep for long enough. Don’t set an alarm on your day off. If you wake up automatically, go back to sleep again. Use a face mask to block out the morning sun, if needed. Sleep is highly restorative.

Burning the candle at both ends won’t work indefinitely. By taking care of yourself, it will put you in a better place to take care of others.

If you do find you're struggling with your emotions or feelings, then perhaps personalized Bach flower remedies might be a good option for you. Whether you're feeling anxious, overly sensitive, unmotivated, or even lonely, there is a remedy for you.

  2. I have been trying to have a personal day one day each week. As bloggers, it's easy to work 24/7 so we have to make a conscious effort to dedicate one day for relaxation.

As a mom, there is always (like, ALWAYS) something to do. However, I do make my family understand that I am not a machine and I need quiet time for myself. I find it more important to take care of my mental health, and that skin and hair care is only second to it.
