How to Take Care of your Teeth in times of Self-Isolation

How to Take Care of your Teeth in times of Self-Isolation

In this period where most of the businesses are closed, it is tough to book your next dental appointment with your dentists. Even if many have told you that you have nice sets of teeth, it is very important that you take care of them and prevent any dental problems.

We might be missing a dental check-up for a few weeks, but here are some tips on how to take care of your teeth while in self-isolation.

1. Don’t go to bed without brushing your teeth
It’s no secret that the general recommendation is to brush at least twice a day. Sometimes, we those days we forgot (actually, feel lazy) to brush our teeth, and that’s a big no no. Brushing before bed gets rid of the germs and plaque that accumulate throughout the day.

2. Brush properly
The way you brush is equally important — in fact, doing a poor job of brushing your teeth is almost as bad as not brushing at all. Take your time, moving the toothbrush in gentle, circular motions to remove plaque. Unremoved plaque can harden, leading to calculus buildup and gingivitis (early gum disease).

3. Don’t neglect your tongue
Have you heard that choking sound when someone is brushing? That is because people brush their tongue too. Plaque can also build up on your tongue. Not only can this lead to bad mouth odor (eew!), but it can lead to other oral health problems. Gently brush your tongue every time you brush your teeth.

4. Use a fluoride toothpaste
When it comes to toothpaste, there are more important elements to look for than whitening power and flavors. No matter which version you choose, make sure it contains fluoride.

While fluoride has come under scrutiny by those worried about how it impacts other areas of health, this substance remains a mainstay in oral health. This is because fluoride is a leading defense against tooth decay. It works by fighting germs that can lead to decay, as well as providing a protective barrier for your teeth.

5. Treat flossing as important as brushing
Flossing once a day is usually enough to stimulate the gums, reduce plaque, and help lower inflammation in your teeth area.

Flossing can be difficult, especially for young children and older adults with arthritis. Rather than give up, look for tools that can help you floss your teeth. Ready-to-use dental flossers from the drugstore can make a difference.

6. Consider mouthwash
Just like flossing, using a mouthwash is also important. Mouthwash helps in three ways: It reduces the amount of acid in the mouth, cleans hard-to-brush areas in and around the gums, and re-mineralizes the teeth.

Ask your dentist for specific mouthwash recommendations. Certain brands are best for children, and those with sensitive teeth, we recommend using Bactidol. Prescription mouthwash is also available.

7. Drink more water
Water continues to be the best beverage for your overall health — including oral health. Also, as a rule of thumb, drink water after every meal. This can help wash out some of the negative effects of sticky and acidic foods and beverages in between brushes.

8. Eat crunchy fruits and vegetables
Ready-to-eat foods are convenient, but perhaps not so much when it comes to your teeth. Eating fresh, crunchy produce not only contains more healthy fiber, but it’s also the best choice for your teeth. Try to avoid the overly mushy processed stuff, stop cutting things into tiny pieces, and get those jaws working!

9. Limit sugary and acidic foods
Ultimately, sugar converts into acid in the mouth, which can then erode the enamel of your teeth. These acids are what lead to cavities. Acidic fruits, teas, and coffee can also wear down tooth enamel. While you don’t necessarily have to avoid such foods altogether, it doesn’t hurt to be mindful.

10. Use a reliable and sustainable toothbrush.

It is best to clean your teeth if you use a better tool tin brushing. I recommend using an electronic toothbrush available in the drugstore market. Currently, I am using the Oral-B PRO100 with Crisscross Bristles which cleanses well my teeth in 2-minutes.

Oral-B PRO100 review

Here’s how Oral-B PRO100 works:

• Wet the brush head and apply any kind of toothpaste. We recommend using fluoride toothpaste just like Oral-B Mint Gum Care. To about splashing, guide the brush head to your teeth before switching on your toothbrush.
• When brushing your teeth, guide the brush head slowly from tooth to tooth, spending a few seconds on each tooth surface.
• Start brushing the outsides, then the insides and finally the chewing surfaces. Brush all four quadrants of your whole teeth equally.
• Don’t press too hard. Brush for 2-minutes. The device will switch-off after two-minutes of brushing.

Oral-B PRO100 can be charged using a special charging unit (comes in a box when you purchased the whole set). A full charge takes about 16-hours and enables up to 8-days of regular brushing (twice a day, 2 minutes). It comes with a travel case, perfectly convenient whenever you go.

11. Taking care of your teeth means taking care of your gums too!
Gum disease begins when plaque builds up along and under your gum line. Plaque causes an infection that hurts the gum and bone that hold your teeth in place. A mild form of gum disease may make your gums red, tender, and more likely to bleed. This problem, called gingivitis, can often be fixed by brushing and flossing every day.

A more severe form of gum disease, called periodontitis, must be treated by a dentist. If not treated, this infection can lead to sore, bleeding gums, painful chewing problems, and even tooth loss.
Aside from regularly brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, we also recommend you take gum supplements like Sensedol. It is an over-the-counter supplement that helps to prevent any gum problems.

12. Achieve sparkly whiter teeth every day.

White GLO Accelerator review

We always want a great smile, and making sure it is super clean, bright, and cleaner is important. I am using the White GLO Accelerator device that I’ve bought from Priceline, and I love the result in just one use! My teeth are naturally yellowish (part of being Asian), and since I am in a social distance with my dentist, I decided to use this device. My teeth became one shade lighter after my first use! Continue using it every day for a better result.

  12. This is all good advice. The only thing you missed was flossing! I wasn't able to see a dentist for several years. When I went back last year, they were shocked that there was no plaque on my teeth and attributed it to my constant flossing. And I have the Oral B toothbrush you feature above and love it!!!!
